European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
