Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study indicates that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
